The Eisenhower Institute seeks to support study and education dealing with the role of government in a free society, citizen public service, public policy, and improved understanding of America’s role in world affairs. The Institute desires to encourage and assist promising individuals to pursue studies and research in fields such as: history, government, economics, business administration, and international affairs, so they may provide informed leadership in the conduct of our national life. Each fellowship award is for a stipend of $10,000.
This opportunity is open to doctoral candidates. Applicants should be at an advanced stage of their doctoral candidacies, preferably at the point of preparing their dissertations. WashU can nominate up to two candidates for consideration to the Institute. Applications must be received by Friday, March 7 at 5pm. Please send to Jessica Cissell (jessica.k.cissell@wustl.edu).
Each application must include:
- The applicant’s curriculum vitae and unofficial transcript
- A statement describing the nature and scope of the dissertation, including a timetable for its complication (750 words or less)
- A statement of the applicant’s career aspirations, with a focus on connecting research to professional/volunteer experience and/or career aspirations and applications outside academia (750 words or less)
- A statement describing how the applicant will use the funding (at least 50% should be used for research-related activities)
- A writing sample preferably on a topic related to the dissertation (1-2 pages)
- Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the applicant’s doctoral advisor. These letters should not be seen by the applicants.
Each fellowship award is for a stipend of $10,000. Each university may make its own arrangements for disbursing the funds to the Fellows. The Institute requires a brief progress report from the Fellow’s doctoral advisor no later than November 15, 2026 in order for the second half of the stipend to be disbursed by the Institute.
